Why should you, as a Christian, wear Christian clothing?

Why should Christians wear Christian clothing?

Why should Christians wear Christian clothing? And do you also find evangelizing difficult? In the blog below, I will show you that wearing Christian clothing is a beautiful and subtle way of evangelism and has many positive effects in reinforcing other forms of evangelism. I also emphasize a piece of awareness regarding wearing Christian clothing and explain why it can be a wonderful addition to the mutual connection between Christians and their walk with God.

Evangelizing difficult?

Yes, I sometimes find evangelizing difficult. As soon as non-believers hear the word 'Jesus', I notice that they often become uncomfortable or even irritated. I notice that they feel resistance, and this, of course, doesn't feel pleasant. There are enough beautiful examples of people who do listen attentively, ask questions, and are open to it, but the chance of 'rejection' is certainly present, and I want to highlight this aspect for now.

I would love to shout from the rooftops that Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth, and The Life, and that no one comes to the Father except through faith in Him, because I wish everyone The Truth and the salvation that is in Jesus. Yet, I sometimes find this difficult. One person may be touched by a radical way of evangelism, but for another, it has the opposite effect, leading to conflict. This consideration is sometimes difficult to make. However, I am convinced that we are called to spread the good news and that God can certainly touch people who initially don't want to hear it at all and offer resistance. This resistance given may well be precisely because it occupies them or because they have had a bad experience with the Jesus as they know Him or have been hurt by the church or a Christian. Moreover, the name Jesus often evokes spiritual struggle when someone has not yet let Jesus into their heart. For there is power in the name of Jesus, and the Word of God is as sharp as a two-edged sword. Precisely for this reason, the Truth of this word, despite the initial resistance, can indeed (eventually) penetrate them.

Mark 16:15: “And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.’”

Denying our flesh

Spreading the good news is also a matter of taking up our cross every day and denying our flesh. What we are afraid might happen should not stand in the way of the Truth of God's word. We are called to spread that Truth, whether convenient or inconvenient. In addition, if you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you simply want that Truth within you to reach the people around you. Not our will be done, but His will. After all, it's not about what another person thinks of you, but resting in the peace that you are doing God's will when you spread His word and that He rejoices over it. His will shall happen with those with whom you share the gospel and for whom you pray. Ultimately, we are also not the ones who have to convert people; we plant a seed, and we leave the conversion to the Holy Spirit. However, also do not forget the following when people do not react as you had hoped:

Matthew 10:14 "And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town."

Subtle evangelism through clothing

Wearing clothes with a Christian message is a good example of a subtle, indirect form of evangelism. You don't shout it from the rooftops, but you do show that you are a Christian without saying anything. A piece of clothing with a Christian message can help spread the good news because you don't have to be the one to take the first step with another person. Someone else will ask you, for example, what a text means or comment on a design. This can easily lead to a conversation about Jesus and can make people think. Usually, however, you aren't even approached, but even then, you might already be planting a seed in someone else because they are 'confronted' with a Christian message or Christian symbols. Consciously or unconsciously, that person will then engage with Jesus. It can also be the extra push someone needs to draw closer to Jesus when they, for example, read a certain Bible verse on an article of clothing.

Christian clothing reinforces the message.

Besides being a form of subtle evangelism, Christian clothing naturally gives that extra boost and reinforces the message if, in addition to wearing the clothes, you also evangelize in another way. A Christian singer with a Christian T-shirt, a street evangelist with a Christian hoodie, a Christian film or series where the main characters wear Christian clothing. Christian clothing reinforces the message. So, evangelizing is not only spreading the word of God by speaking words; it can be done in many ways, and Christian clothing will always reinforce the message.

Evangelizing by living with Jesus

Perhaps the most important form of evangelism is simply evangelizing by living with and for Jesus. By living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

If people know you and know that you are a Christian, and you live accordingly, this can greatly impact non-believers. You deviate from the worldly perspective, and a born-again Christian who allows their life to be led by the Holy Spirit will certainly live differently than the world. Do I mean by this that Christians lead a 'perfect biblical' life? No, absolutely not. They also make many mistakes. To keep it personal: I too have made many mistakes as a 'lukewarm' Christian: for example, regular drunkenness, an egocentric view of life, lustfully looking at other women, and so on. And I still make mistakes every day. Every human is imperfect, and every human falls short of the glory of God. However, the more you focus on Jesus and break bad cycles and habits with the help of surrender to God, prayer, and the Holy Spirit, the more you truly change, and this can be noticeable in your surroundings. Your change and your life with Jesus are a walking testimony to the people around you and one of the strongest forms of evangelism. If you wear Christian clothing during your Christian walk, this will also, of course, reinforce the spread of the gospel of Jesus by indirectly emphasizing it.

Matthew 5:16: "In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Awareness of wearing Christian clothing

If you are familiar with wearing work clothes, you have probably heard that when you wear them, you must be aware and behave yourself, even in public. You are a representative of a company, and if you misbehave while wearing these clothes, your company will get a bad name. If you represent your company well, however, this will earn a good name.

It is the same with Christian clothing. You represent your faith in Jesus Christ. So be aware of this. I do not mean to say that you should only behave if you wear Christian clothing, and as I said before, we all make mistakes, but I mean that you are aware of the fact that you portray yourself as a Christian. So be aware of the fact that you can give glory to His Name, but also harm it.

Christian clothing among Christians

I believe that Christian clothing, and specifically our brand 'Sheep of The Shepherd', can connect Christians of all ages in a cool, modern way, by all of us 'literally' proclaiming our faith in a modern, joyful, and loving way. Sheep of The Shepherd is a daily reminder and motivator for you and your fellow Christians to take up our cross, follow Him, and reflect on our identity in Jesus through His sacrifice.

We are His sheep, and He is our Good Shepherd.

Let us all celebrate this, and not hide it.

Romans 1:16: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes."

Conclusion

Yes, evangelizing can sometimes be difficult, but we are called to it. Christian clothing can contribute to making it easier. Wearing Christian clothing is a subtle form of (indirect) evangelism and lowers the threshold for a conversation about Jesus. In addition, it strengthens every other form of evangelism: from street evangelism to simply living for Jesus under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, the wearing of Christian clothing by Christians among themselves contributes to connection and togetherness and encourages us in our walk with God. However, be aware of the fact that you extra express and emphasize that you are a follower of Jesus; something that can give all glory to God, but can also harm His name.

God's blessing!
